New Myspace Page For My Dance/Trance Music

First the electronic music news. I have finished off the cover of OMD's "Almost" and have decided to have a stab at a Human League track "Sound Of The Crowd" which is going pretty well with the music almost complete and the chorus vocals recorded.

I would still like to tidy up a couple of other cover versions including wrapping up another Gary Numan cover "Down In The Park".

I have decided to do a new Myspace page for my dance/trance music which is something I want to return to in 2009 as I have 14 songs recorded but need to be given the final mix treatment. In addition I have around 8 remixes as well which will be released as a separate album. The name I am working under for my Dance/Trance music is "The Definition Of Sound".

The new page for the dance/trance music can be found here

OMD Cover "Almost" Complete

Another track that was started some time ago is a track originally recorded by OMD called "Almost" which is a track that can be found on their debut album "OMD" which was released in 1980. I have been recording some new vocals this week and also mixed the track and I am delighted that I have finally managed to do a good version of this song. OMD greatly influenced a lot of the songs I wrote in 1989/1990 with ray Naughton so to finally do an OMD track with vocals is great for me.

I may put this one online once I have been in touch with the band.

The 2nd CD revised list of songs to be included:

Don't Go
Complex
Almost
Warszawa
I Nearly Married A Human
Don't Go (GH Re-Invented Mix)
Space Oddity (Full Original Version)
Blue Monday (GH Special Radio Mix)

Still to look at improving or recording the following tracks:

Please Push No More
Trans Europe Express
Nobody's Diary

Where We Are At & Where We Are Going

I'm a bit behind with my updates so to bring things up to date I have completed the single and extended arrangements for the Yazoo cover of "Only You". These can be heard via the links below:

Gary Hunter - Only You (Single Arrangement)

Gary Hunter - Only You (GH Extended Arrangement)

I have had probably my most positive feedback on "Only You" which is pleasing as I do think on the vocal side it is my best effort to date.

I have just finished off a cover of Gary Numan's track "Complex" off his album "The Pleasure Principle" and that can be heard on my myspace page and via iCompositions in high quality here

I started "Complex" a year ago but abandoned it as I could not get a good enough vocal done but returned to it recently and finished off the music and managed to do a pretty good vocal on a song which is very difficult to sing.

I am also putting the finishing touches to another David Bowie cover "Warszawa" a track I really do like which is on his classic album "Low". I am hoping to get the finished version of that done by next weekend.

The covers album "As It Is When It Was" is complete and I am now going back to some of the tracks I did n't finish off or scrapped with a view to doing a 2 CD edition of the CD. The revised final track listing for "As It Is When It Was" is below:

Blue Monday (Long Version)
Me I Disconnect from You
Europe Endless (GH Single Arrangement)
Too Pieces
She's Lost Control (GH Electronic Mix)
Cars
Gordon's Gin (GH Extended Arrangement)
Neon Lights
Goodbye 70's
Space Oddity (GH Space Age Synthetic Mix)
Living On The Ceiling
Only You
Love Will Tear Us Apart (New Vocal Mix)

The second CD will feature tracks, as mentioned, that were worked on during the sessions for "As It Is When It Was" and also alternative mixes of some of the tracks off that album. So far this is what will be included:

Blue Monday (GH Radio Mix)
Europe Endless (Full Version)
Don't Go
Don't Go (GH Re-Invented Mix)
Complex
Warszawa
I Nearly Married A Human
Space Oddity (Original Long Version)

Hopefully I will include the following tracks to If I can do vocals I am happy with:

Please Push No More
He's A Liquid
Trans Europe Express

Once that is complete then it is going to be full steam ahead on my album "Systematic" with some work done on the album over the last week or so. A potential new song, well lyrics done for a potential new song.

As mentioned you can listen to "Only You" and "Complex" on my myspace page to via this link:

On my iCompositions page you will find 49 songs to listen to which you can access here

Only You - 2 Versions Completed

I really do like doing 80's style 12 inch mixes and I have done what must be a very unique extended mix of the Yazoo track "Only You". It runs at over 5 minutes and keeps all the key elements of the original sounds of the song (At least as close as I could get!) so this must be the first extended version of the track available, yes we have probably had butchered to death long versions of the song but this is very close to an extended mix of the true original track.

I have completed the original "Single" mix cover to, both will be online next weekend.

Today I have added my own extended arrangement of the cover version of the Gary Numan track "Cars" I have recorded which again is pretty much a typical 80's extended mix keeping to as close as possible to the original sounds.

You can listen to my "Long Distance Mix" of "Cars" here

"Living On The Ceiling" Covers Now Online

I have now posted both versions I have recorded of the fantastic Blancmange track "Living On The Ceiling". You can listen to those on my myspace page here

I will probably also upload them to listen to on my page on iCompositions over the weekend.

I have almost finished a cover version of Yazoo's "Only You". A track I scrapped at an early demo stage because the vocal was proving a non starter. Returned to after several weeks did a blinding vocal so I have finished off the instrumentation and should have that online maybe tomorrow as well.

Covers Album Followed By Blancmange For Dessert!

It has been a few weeks since I did my last blog so what has been happening?

Firstly the compilation CD "Here We Go - The Other Side Of Metal Beat" which features my track "Stranger In A Room" has been released and has received some excellent reviews. It is a fantastic CD and well worth checking out. You can find out more about the album and purchase it here

I have also recently completed an album of cover versions called "As It Is When It Was", which has been sent to friends on the myspace scene and family as a thank you for there support, encouragement and invaluable help.

Here is the front cover of the CD and the track listing for those interested in the tracks I have covered:

01 Blue Monday (New Order Cover)
02 Me I Disconnect From You (Tubeway Army Cover)
03 Europe Endless (Kraftwerk Cover)
04 Don't Go (Yazoo Cover)
05 She's Lost Control (Joy Division Cover)
06 He's A Liquid (John Foxx Cover)
07 Cars (Gary Numan Cover)
08 Goodbye 70's (Yazoo Cover)
09 Gordon's Gin (Human League Cover)
10 Neon Lights (Kraftwerk Cover)

13 Computer Love (Kraftwerk Cover)
14 Space Oddity (David Bowie Cover)
15 Please Push No More (Gary Numan Cover)
16 Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division Cover)

During the last week or so I have been working on 2 versions of the fantastic track "Living On The Ceiling" which was a hit for Blancmange in the 1980's. I have recorded a "Single" version and also an extended mix which runs at just over 6 minutes and is typical 80's extended mix!

I have been given permission by Blancmange to put the track on my pages and will upload both versions for people to listen to (Blancmange have asked me to let them know when my cover version is online!).

This will be my last cover version for a while as I want to concentrate on my album "Systematic" which is coming along nicely with 7 songs recorded including a cracking new version of a very popular track "I Remember You" as well as a brand new version of "I Once Was A Machine" which again has proved to be a very popular track on my web sites with well over 500 plays. the album will also include the track "Stranger In A Room".

That pretty much brings things up to date!

An Additional Kraftwerk Cover Version

Whilst mastering the covers album I am doing for friends and family I took a break from doing that and for some strange reason decided to re-record the first Kraftwerk cover I did over a year ago called "Europe Endless". The track was never used for the Kraftwerk covers album I did called "Music By Design as I did n't like my vocal for one and secondly some of the synth work was n't brilliant, also I hated the sequencer sound I used!

I set about recording some choir sounds which is what is used in Kraftwerk's original then record a new sequencer track and I thought blimey this is bloody good! Tonight I decided to have a go at completely new vocals and I laid down the whole lot! Typical as I must have done over 2 dozen takes when I originally recorded the song last year.

If I am happy with it the song will be included on the covers album "As It Is When It Was".

Dreaming About Me Now I'm Disconnected!

Wrapped up my version of "Me I Disconnect From You" this evening and have also been recording a cover of the fantastic Moby track "Dream About Me" which I have to say is coming along really well.

Over the weekend and tonight I have also been working on a new recording of the well received track "I Once Was A Machine" so it fits better with the rest of the songs off the new album I am working on called "Systematic". Pretty much ready to start the task of recording the new version tomorrow.

This will give me 7 songs recorded for the album with the lyrics and ideas in the memory bank for 2 further songs "Smoke Screen" and "Years Ago".

5th Gary Numan Cover

I have almost completed a cover version of the Gary Numan track "Me I Disconnect From You" another cracking track off his "Replicas" album. This now means I have recorded 5 of Gary's songs so perhaps maybe half way to a Gary Numan covers album! Here is the list of songs I have covered:

Cars
Replicas
I Nearly Married A Human
Please Push No More
Me I Disconnect From You

In addition I have some demo's I have done of a couple of other tracks which are, Complex and Metal. I think I might possibly manage to finish off "Complex" at some point. It was shelved as I could n't get the vocal right although I do like the music I have done so that might spur me on for one last effort on the vocal front!

I am drawing to a close on doing cover versions so that I can concentrate on my new album "Systematic". I will be returning to that album in a couple of weeks as I am intending to have a 2 week period where I don't touch a synth!!

2 Posts In A Day ...... Blimey!

This afternoon I started and pretty much finished an extended arrangement of Yazoo's "Don't Go". It has come out excellent, I love doing remixes & extended versions of songs, it is something I tend to do with more or less each song I record whether it is a cover version or original recording.

Gary

"Stranger In A Room" Is To Appear On New Compilation

First off the big news. My John Foxx inspired track "Stranger In A Room" is to be featured on a brand new compilation called "Here We Go - The Other Side Of Metal Beat". The album is to be released on August 25th by the Toffeetones label and is a very limited edition release and could well be a very collectable album. The album comprises of artists who name John Foxx as one of their influences.

The album will feature tracks from Louis Gordon (Long time collaborator with John Foxx with the release of several albums) and Anne Clark who John has also worked with.

The album promises to be very special indeed and I am delighted to have a track on it. Here is the full track listing and front cover of the CD:

01 Paul Berry - A stranger in your house
02 Anne Clark - Full moon Club Mix
03 LOGAN 5 - The Future that never arrived
04 Sunset People - Wonderland
05 Mark Lane - Who's really listening?
06 The Glimmer Room - Grey mirrors (pt 7)
07 Louis Gordon - Move through grey
08 Lethal Foam - 113
09 Better Strangers - Thematic
10 Neuvogue - Synth City
11 Toffeetronic-Let me in
12 The Upstairs Faction - The world is just a mirage
13 The Light Dreams - Reflections
14 Future Daze - Oxygen
15 Gary Hunter - Stranger In A Room
16 Sarah Bradshaw - Incandescence
17 The Mateyblokes - Tuesday Blues
18 Geigertek - Picture In Eyes

On the same day the CD is released Robo Cast Radio will be releasing a very special podcast that will be "John Foxx" themed. So the 25th of August is a day to look forward to.

Information about the CD can be found here

Now other bits and pieces .....

I have made a few minor changes to a John Foxx cover I have done called "He's A Liquid" which is now complete and will upload this cover to my myspace page and my page on iCompositions on .......... 25th August! I have spoken to Rob Harris who does all the work behind the scene's for John and he has given me permission to post the song for which I am very grateful.

A few weeks back I started work on another Yazoo cover "Don't Go" but ditched it as I could n't get the vocal right. For some strange reason I thought I would have ago again at the vocal the other day and recorded the thing in almost one take!! Typical as I must have done 20+ takes previously!. The song is almost done and I am going to do my own extended arrangement of the song to. Both will at some point be added to my myspace and icomposition pages.

I also recorded the basics of Gary Numan's "Me I Disconnect From You" this week and may well do that song.

My David Bowie cover is almost done. I have done a very electronic version of "Space Oddity" and just have a couple of vocal changes to make.

I think that more or less brings us up to date.

My Human League Cover Is Fan Mix Of The Month

I am pleased to say that my extended mix of an old Human League classic has been made "Fan Mix Of the Month" on a well established Human League fan site. The track in question is the instrumental track "Gordon's Gin" which appeared on their album "Travelogue". It is a track I always thought was to short and so I wanted to do my own extended version of it.

You can listen to or download the track via the link below:

Gary Hunter - Gordon's Gin (Extended Arrangement)

I have also submitted my own version of a John Foxx classic "He's A Liquid" to John's official web page so hopefully I will get some feedback on that.

I have been working on my David Bowie cover this week which is sounding really good!

Music Update!

I have finished my latest Gary Numan cover "Please Push No More" and am once again delighted with it. The track is off his album "Telekon". I have uploaded the song to my iCompositions page and you can listen to it here

I have also uploaded my version of another Gary Numan track "Replicas" and that can be listened to here

I have also started work on a David Bowie track so keep an eye out for that!

Completed "I Remember You" after some last minute changes. I love this new version it is very dark with loads of layered synth sounds - one of my best recordings in my opinion. For those interested here are the lyrics to "I remember You":

I remember you
With the painted eyes
With thoughts as cold as ice
You turned and walked away

Do you remember me?
With the cold grey smile
If I could see you now
We could forget the lies

I remember you
Such a bright young thing
You let your dreams grow old
You could just fade away

Do you remember me?
With the cold grey smile
If I could see you now
We could forget the lies

I remember you

I Remember You & Gary Numan

I have recorded my brand new version of "I remember You" and it has come out fantastic, very atmospheric and a song Gary Numan could easily put his own vocals to. The song itself is about Numan and how his fame came to an abrupt end but it did n't worry him at all and when many other artists would have quit the music business Gary continued with his career and now it is paying dividends with a host of bands naming him as an influence. "I Remember You" as I say is about his fall from the top of the music tree and about how many fans have stuck by him when he could so easily have quit the music business. I am going to send the song to Gary in the vain hope he might be interested in it!

Continuing the Numan theme, I recently joined the forum community of the well respected Gary Numan fan website "Numanme". Unbelievably I have visited this site for years but never realized they had forums on it! I have met a few people in their and the guy who runs it is asking for cover versions to be sent in for a tribute album and I have sent the 3 cover versions I have recorded so far (I Nearly Married A Human, Cars & Replicas), however, I have started recording another Gary Numan cover, this time a track off his album "Telekon" called "Please Push No More" a fantastic electronic ballad. I actually got a midi file for this track off the Numanme website but the song was only 1 minute long!!! I have used the basis of the midi file to construct a full song and I think the arrangement works fine. Need to do mixing and re-record some of the vocals.

I have also been recording the Yazoo track "Don't Go" and whilst I have done the music the vocals are proving a bit of a nightmare so that one is on the back burner for now whilst I concentrate on "Please Push No More" and of course my own track "I remember You"

Yesterday I posted my cover version of the Gary Numan track "Replicas" on my iCompositions page. You can access that and 30+ other songs I have on there via the link below:

Yazoo & New Album Update

I have had quite a busy week on the music front this week. First off did some adjustments with my Yazoo cover "Goodbye 70's" with a new mix of the vocals and a change in one of the lead synth sounds as I was n't happy with it. The track is now complete and I do like the mix now I have made those changes. Vocals are difficult to mix right but I am improving with the mixing technique of vocals.

The extended version I recorded of "Goodbye 70's" has obviously seen a change in the vocal mix and of course the change of one of the sounds used in the main synth hook. I have extended it further to and I think my extended arrangement works very well.

I have also started work on another Yazoo track "Don't Go" which is coming along nicely.

In the last 2 days I have returned to working on my new electronic album and have done some new vocal mixes of the tracks "A Face I Knew" and "The Glimmer Man" (Also the extended versions of those 2 songs to). Today I have been working on a totally new version of "I remember You" so it fits in better with the overall sound of the album and of course I have used the Roland CR78 Drum Machine on this version to. Even though I say it myself I do think "I Remember You" is a stunning song. The new version is sounding very strong to, very haunting and cold!

Tomorrow I am going to record all the tracks for the new version of "I Remember You" so I should have a fairly good mix of the new version tomorrow if everything goes to plan.

Update regards the tracks and where I am up to with them:

A Face I Knew (Finished)
Stranger In A Room (Finished)
The Glimmer Man (Finished)
Car Crash Flashback (Chorus Vocal To Do & Final Mix)
A Million Stars (Going To Re-Do The Vocal & Then Do Final Mix)
I Remember You (New Recording To Be Made This Weekend)
Smoke Screen (Lyrics Written & Rough Melody Outline - Still To Record)
Years Ago (Lyrics Written Only)
I Once Was A Machine (New Recording Of This Track Still To Be Done)

If I can get that lot done that is 9 tracks for the album, I would like to record 11 tracks for the album.

Yazoo Covers Now Online

I have now finished recording the Yazoo tracks "Too Pieces" and "Goodbye 70's" and once again I think I have managed to do a decent job of these 2 songs judging by the feedback I have has so far any way!

I have now uploaded both songs on to the player on my MySpace page and have also uploaded much better quality files to my page on iCompositions.

I have also done an extended arrangement of "Goodbye 70's" which I think works really well indeed. It is a typical 80's extended dance mix running just over 5 minutes and may upload this gem to my pages also.

I have to thank Greg who does all Yazoo's/Erasure's web pages as he has said it is ok to have them on my pages providing they are not downloadable which is more than fair enough. He has also said he will do his best to get the cover versions to both Vince Clarke & Alison Moyet which would be something if it happens!

Yazoo Covers On My MySpace Page

To listen to the songs on my icompositions page the direct links are below:

Gary Hunter - Goodbye 70's (Yazoo Cover Version)

Gary Hunter - Too Pieces (Yazoo Cover Version)

I have also started work on another 2 Yazoo songs and if I can succeed in doing a decent job of both the music and the vocals then I will post more news about those in the near future.

Hopefully next week I will get back to recording more of my own material.

Goodbye 70's

I have now almost finished my cover version of Yazoo's "Goodbye 70's". I just need to make a slight change in one of the vocal parts and then it is done. I have been in touch with Yazoo's main website about putting the 2 Yazoo covers on my web pages and they have said it is n't a problem so next weekend both "Too Pieces" and "Goodbye 70's" will be uploaded to my pages for you to listen to.

This weekend I have spent a considerable amount of time remastering my Kraftwerk Album cover versions. It has taken a while to do but I now have far superior recordings of all the tracks I have recorded.

I'm In Vince Clarke Mode!

I have now finished my cover version of the Yazoo track "Too Pieces" which I can honestly say ranks as one of my best cover versions to date. I am really surprised I have managed to do this one, especially on the vocal front, the track really suits my voice and I have pulled off one of my best vocal performances on this track without a doubt.

This afternoon I have tried a vocal of the Yazoo track "Goodbye 70's and again it has come out remarkably well so I now need to start work on the music. I was going to start this at the weekend but I am quite spurred on by the test vocal I have done so I think this track may get priority over the next few days, it will be interesting to see how this one develops!

Upstairs At Gary's!

This weekend I have been working on a Yazoo cover. I have recorded "Too Pieces" which is my favourite track off their album "Upstairs At Erics". Yesterday I learnt and recorded the drum patterns and the string synth sections and did what was intended as a rough guide vocal, however, it was a really good first take vocal which I have kept. Today I have done the sequencer parts and odd synth bits and done some mixing and this could well turn out to be one of my strongest ever cover versions. The vocal really compliments the music so well.

I tend to send work in progress to a good friend of mine on the Myspace scene, Ian Price and he came back with a fantastic overview of the music and thought the vocal was really excellent, so that will do for me!

I will probably mix down the track over the next few days and then it will be complete.

New Track "Smoke Screen"

I have finished the lyrics for the new song "Smoke Screen". Not started any music at all for the track but I thought I would share the lyrics I have written with you. Here they are:

Whilst you were sleeping
I stepped in to your dream
No thoughts worth keeping
Is this a smoke screen?
I think you know me
The air it seems so clean
Reflections, Maybe?
This Is a smoke screen

Inside The City
Is like a fog drenched scene
Please drift through with me
Is this a smoke screen?
We change direction
Are things the way they seem?
The wrong connection
This is a smoke screen

I know it's been a while
You took my breath away
I focus on your smile
Then watch you fade away

John Foxx Cover

Decided to have a quite week on the music front, in theory any way!

I fully intended to get back to my own album this week, however, another cover version has surfaced, well two actually! Firstly I have recorded a track called "He's A Lquid" which is a cover version of a track recorded by John Foxx on his album "Metamatic". It has come out very well and is very similar in sound to John's original version. I have sent an e-mail to the guy that looks after John's website to try and get permission to upload the cover on to my web pages.

I have used the following instruments on "He's A Liquid"

Roland CR78 Drum Machine
NI Pro53 Synth
Superwave Pro Synth
Novation Bass Station
Vanguard Synth

I have also recorded a fair chunk of an OMD track "Almost". This is one of my all time favourite tracks of OMD's and is a track that appeared on their debut album in 1980. Not done any mixing or vocals and I'm at the stage of messing about with the arrangement. Hopefully this can develop in to a really good cover version.

My New Order cover versions have gone down a treat it would seem with excellent feedback being received.

Some work has been done on my new album with a new vocal recorded for the track "The Glimmer Man" as I was n't too happy with the original vocal on it. So today I am recording the final version of that track and also doing the extended version to.

I am tidying up the loose ends on the 5 tracks recorded so far then it is on with a couple of new tracks. The title "Smoke Screen" mentioned in one of my previous blogs has developed in to a song, well lyrics written any way, just have to come up with one more verse then it is then a case of starting to come up with ideas on the music front for that one.

Some Lyrics - Maybe A New Song

I use to try and write lyrics in the style of a number of 80's electronic artists in the early 80's and a verse has always remained stuck in my head and strangely enough it popped up in my head again this week. The simple lyric was this:

I'm looking back
and it was .....
years ago
years ago
years ago
years ago

It was a John Foxx type song it was tailored for. I never developed the song but as I am recording John Foxx type material at present it is something that might fit in with some new lyrics I have been working on in the last couple of days, and may well work as a chorus to the new lyrics. There is a tune mulling around in my head at the moment to these new lyrics. Here they are:

We look through photographs
From so long ago
An empty room
A cinema
And places I don't know

She turned and looked at me
With a distant smile
A vacant look
So far away
Like it had been a while

A room without a view
I was lost in time
In the stairway
A reflection
But it could have been mine

Then a flickering light
Seemed to catch my eye
No one was there
I looked again
Dissolved, I don't know why

Lyrics By Gary Hunter

Another title I quite like is "Smoke Screen" which i think is a very John Foxx like title. That may even turn out to be the title of song with the lyrics above. I certainly want to use it even if it is for another song.

The New Order covers of "Blue Monday" & "The Beach" are finished and I am delighted I have done a decent job of these tracks. Two versions of "Blue Monday" recorded, a special Radio mix and of course a long version. I will probably post a couple of the recordings on iCompositions over the weekend.

The Beach

I have decided to do the B-Side of "Blue Monday" which is called "The Beach" which is infact a re-worked dub version of "Blue Monday". I have been listening to the original and done a similar arrangement to it. Some drum effects have been added and some special effect sounds which has given the track a bit of life as the original of "The Beach" is pretty much a drums and bass with a hint of sequencer in it. I'm very pleased with it I have to say.

Blue Monday Finished

I have completed my version of the New Order classic "Blue Monday" after making a few changes to the mix. Once again I am delighted how this has come out with the vocals probably being the best I have ever done, which is an achievement in itself as I certainly cannot label myself as a singer - not by a long way!

In addition to a long version of the track I have also done an edited "Radio Mix" which again has come out fantastic. I think the arrangement for the "Single" version works superbly.

I will post at least one of the versions on my iCompositions page so people can have a listen, probably next weekend.

Blue Monday, Thursday Changes!

I have today made quite a few changes in my cover version of "Blue Monday". First off I ditched the bass line and recorded a new one. Also I was n't happy with one of the sequencer tracks so that was changed and a fair few changes in the mix of the drums have been made. The rhythm section sounds very powerful now and the changes I have made blend the sound much better. I re-recorded some of my vocals which I think are pretty good, much better than I thought. The vocals have been double tracked to beef them up and to smooth them out and some delay and stereo phase effects have been added to the vocal mix.

I will have a good listen to it again this evening and then tweak it a bit more if needed.

The track "A Million Stars" needs the slightest of changes on the middle 8 strings then that and the extended version of the song are complete. I am hoping to record the chorus vocal on "Car Crash Flashback" tomorrow to finish that one off.

I have today been learning the main hook of "Underpass" by John Foxx so that might be another potential cover version in the future.

Wednesday's New Order Day!

Carrying on with my conveyor belt of cover versions I have recorded New Order's twelve inch classic "Blue Monday". I decided to do this track after watching their brand new live DVD "Live In Glasgow" which is a stunning concert - well worth buying!

It has taken 3 days to do and a vocal has been recorded tonight which is pretty good for a first take. My version is once again completely electronic with not a guitar in sight!

When I am happy with the mix I will probably post it on my iCompositions page maybe this weekend.

For those interested in the technical stuff this is a list of the instruments used in this recording:

Boss DR550 Drum Machine
Vanguard Synth
SW Performer Synth
Magnus Choir Synth (First time I have used this synth and it is top notch for choir sounds)
Rob Papen Predator Synth
Trance Grooves Drum Machine

Longer Stars!

I have now done the extended version of "A Million Stars". I Did alter the arrangement a few times before settling on the completed version which is 5 mins 20 secs long so it is almost twice as long as the album version.

I badly need to finish the vocal on "Car Crash Flashback" but am struggling with a chest infection at the moment so I may start the new version of "I Once Was A Machine" over the next day or so.

Other news now. I got in touch with one of the most recognized New Order/Joy Division web pages worldinmotion.net about my Joy Division cover versions and the guy who runs the site has posted a message on their forum so hopefully a few more people will get to hear them. The site is superb and is packed with information all about New Order & Joy Division and side projects and I highly recommend you take a peak.

Human League Cover & A Million Stars

I have now completed my cover of The Human League's "Gordon's Gin" which I have sent to the semi official Human League site Electronically Yours. Whether I hear anything from the guy that looks after the site I don't know as in the past I have been in touch I have n't even had the courtesy of a response but I do believe in the saying "If at first you don't succeed try and try again" - I'm not holding my breath on that one.

"A Million Stars" is now finished to and is a track I really do love. I have managed to get that "John Foxx" sound again on this one and have done a good dead pan vocal that suits the track incredibly well. I will probably do an extended mix of this song as I have with "A Face I Knew" and "The Glimmer Man". More on that once I work out an arrangement!

I am feeling fairly confident that the great man Peter Hook from New Order/Joy Division will listen to my two Joy Division covers as he sent me a message from Spain where he is currently holidaying or maybe working or a bit of both and he said he will be listening to them when he gets back, which I genuinely hope he does as I think both covers are good. Let's put it this way people who have listened to them think so! Hopefully Peter will send me some feedback - fingers crossed.

Next I am going to record a brand new version of the track "I Once Was A Machine" - that is the plan any way.

A Million Stars Progress Update

Managed to get all the instrumentation recorded for "A Million Stars", I have just a couple of synth bits to add. Done a good vocal today so this track apart from mixing down is almost done. I am going to get that finished off then record the vocal chorus for "Car Crash Flashback" which will then see that track completed.

My cover of Human League's "Gordon's Gin" has been made a little longer and I have just one synth to change on a part of that which will tidy up the song.

Have a couple of other ideas as well this week for new songs, just some melody bits I have come up with so I will see in the next few weeks where those ideas take me.

I am going to do a new recording of "I Once Was A Machine" for the album to as I think it is a song that fits in well with the structure and direction the album is heading. So an up to date list of where I am up to song wise with the album:

A Face I Knew (Completed)
Stranger In The Room (Completed)
The Glimmer Man (Completed)
A Million Stars (Almost Complete)
Car Crash Flashback (Almost Complete)
I Once Was A Machine (Next Track To record)

A Bigger Drop Of Gin!

My original recording of The Human League's "Gordon's Gin" has been replaced with a new extended arrangement as the original version is a little on the short side and the track really does lend it self to an extended version.

Not to sure what I will do with this track at the moment.

A Drop Of Gin!

During this week I have in between my own material been working on another cover version, this time, The Human League's "Gordon's Gin" off their album "Travelogue". I struggled a bit at first with this one but decided to go for it today and surprisingly I have managed to record the whole track. I have done a rough first mix with effects added to the sounds which I will listen to later tonight and then make any changes tomorrow if I can.

Some Lyrics For "A Million Stars"

Been working on the track "A Million Stars" mainly on doing some lyrics. I might possibly change the title of this song as i'm not sure about it yet, although the lyrics do have that line in. This is what I have come up with on the lyric front:

We're driving through the city
We're driving through the night
We're lost amongst the debris
Is that a neon light?
I see the patterns changing
I don't know where we are
Lost focus for a moment
I'm sure it can't be far

I'm walking in the subway
I think I am alone
A million stars above me
I can't be far from home
I'm talking on the phone now
We're both passing time
A statue by the old school
Another danger sign

Lyrics By Gary Hunter

Car Crash Flashback

"Car Crash Flashback" is almost complete with the verse vocals done and the middle 8 vocal recorded. Just need to do the chorus vocals. I must point out at this stage that I have a good friend on Myspace, Ian Price (Future Daze, School Of Ambience & Robo cast radio) who is very helpful in respect of ideas for mixing vocals which has really been great as to be honest I just tended to slap a bit of reverb on my vocals but now experiment with all sorts of things like layering the vocals adding both phase & flange effects. So personal thanks to Ian for his guidence. Here are some of Ian's web pages:

My other new song "A Million Stars" still needs a fair bit of work and may have a mess about with that one tonight.

A Million Stars

Whilst giving my car a run today I had a new melody in my head which has started to evolve in to another new track. Spent a little time today recording a few ideas in Cubase and have come up with a track which is starting to knit together very well. It has a working title of "A Million Stars".

Changed a bit of the arrangement in "Car Crash Flashback" today as well. Hoping to do some vocals tomorrow (sods law I have a bit of a husky voice today!!).

Great progress on "Car Crash Flashback" & Joy Division Covers News

I made excellent progress in recording the new track "Car Crash Flashback" yesterday with the bulk of the music now recorded. Once again I am really pleased with this track and it sounds excellent alongside the 3 other tracks I have recorded for the album so far (A Face I Knew, The Glimmer Man" & Stranger In The Room).

Instrument wise on this one I have used the following:

Roland Juno-D synth
NI Pro53 Synth
Superwave Pro Synth
Novation Bass Station
Roland CR78 Drum Machine
Rob Papen Blue Synth
Rob Papen Predator Synth
& A few Other Synths

As the album is very much inspired by the album "metamatic" by John Foxx I came up with the working title of "Systematic" which I do like, so for now, that is going to be the "working title" of the project. Below is the art work for the front cover (Again this might change)

My 2 Joy Division covers continue to get brilliant positive comments and a few weeks back I sent a message to Peter Hook (Member of Joy Division/New Order) about placing the cover versions on to my myspace page. Last night I got a message back from he stating it's fine by him, which is great, but even better is that he has asked me for a copy of my cover versions which is fantastic. Whether he just collects cover versions of the songs or he has heard them and likes them I don't know. Let's hope he likes them, if he does what is interesting is he now does a lot of DJ'ing so who knows these cover versions may well reacher a wider audience ...... I can but dream!

Car Crash Flasback & More

Now I am nearing the end of the Joy Division Covers sessions I have returned to my own material for my new electronic album, but, before I get to that this is what has been happening this week:

My cover of Joy Divisions "Dead Souls" still needs a good vocal to finish it off. I may also have a mess around with the chorus synth sounds I have used. If i do manage to nail a decent vocal then I will settle for that.

I have also recorded a fair bit of a New Order cover version. The track I am doing is my all time favorite track of theirs "Bizarre Love Triangle". I have recorded most of the music on that one to and it is sounding excellent. No vocals recorded yet.

..... now back to my album. I have started work on another new track which is called "Car Crash Flashback". So far I have laid down some drum patterns (Once again I am using the Roland CR78 Drum Machine) and some synths and written the lyrics. The song is once again inspired by John Foxx. Here are the lyrics to the song, which may change!

I saw you standing there
By the broken chair
We dissolve the memories
In the fading light

I don't remember you
Why am I off the beaten track?
I can see a silhouette
It's a car crash flashback

We left the smoke filled room
It was early June
We walked and talked all night
In the fading light

I don't remember you
Why am I off the beaten track?
I can see a silhouette
It's a car crash flashback

I'm changing direction
I'm switching scene's

I don't remember you
Why am I off the beaten track?
I can see a silhouette
It's a car crash flashback

Lyrics by Gary Hunter

So all being well I will tidy up the last 2 cover versions and make serious progress with "Car Crash Flashback".

My Second Joy Division Cover Is Now Online

My second Joy Division cover version is now complete and has been uploaded on to my page at iCompositions. You can listen to the track here

A reminder also that my other Joy Division cover of "She's Lost Control" can be listened to here

I am working on a third and probably final Joy Division song called "Dead Souls" which is progressing well. I have to admit though that it has proved bloody difficult to do an electronic version of the song as it is quite a powerful track. I have given it a very heavy electronic feel to it and is barely recognizable to the original except for the chorus sections. Most of the music is recorded and have done a few vocal takes and also think the vocals on this one will be quite a challenge for my very limited vocal range!

Getting Away With It All Mixed Up!

I have done some mixing down today of my Joy Division Cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and I have to say this version of the song I have done has blown me away. I am amazed at how "Live Sounding" I have managed to get a drum machine to sound. It is very powerful and I think people are going to be very surprised at my take on LWTUA.

The song is almost complete and I will tidy up any issues with the mix in the next day or so.

It should be on my iCompositions page at the end of the week.

Love Will Tear Us Apart

This week I am working on another Joy Division cover version. This time it is the brilliant "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Recording of the track has gone really well with all the rhythm and instruments recorded and a vocal done. I am now, over the next couple of days, going to do the mixing. I have given the track an uplifting electronic feel whilst keeping to the original key elements of the track and have once again tried to re-create the original rhythm section. Hopefully the track will be posted on my iCompositions web page later in the week.

Here are the instruments used on "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

Boss DR550 Drum Machine
Roland Juno-D Synth
NI Pro53 Synth
Vanguard Synth
Rob Papen Predator Synth
Rob Papen Blue Synth
JP-8000 Synth

All recording done using Steinbergs Cubase

My other Joy Division cover version "She's Lost Control" has been gaining some stunning positive feedback which I am absolutely delighted with as I wanted to try and do justice to this truly excellent song without ripping apart the original arrangement. If you have n't heard the track yet then you can here

A good friend I have on the Myspace scene is Ian Price who records his own music under the names Future Daze and School Of Ambience. Ian asked if he could do a re-working of my new electronic track "The Glimmer Man" which he has now completed. The re-worked version of "The Glimmer Man" can be listened to here

My original recording of "The Glimmer Man" will also be uploaded to my sites shortly after I have made a few minor adjustments to effects on my vocals.

Control - Mission Accomplished!

Did the mixing down of my Joy Division cover "She's Lost Control" today and also re-recorded a couple of the vocal elements I was unhappy with.

I have to say that I think this track is stunning even though I say it myself - I am really amazed at how this track has developed and how the finished version sounds.

Instruments used on this song:

Novation Bass Station
Vanguard Synth
Boss DR550 Drum Machine
Alesis HR16 Drum Machine

She's Lost Control!

A while ago I recorded a very rough demo of Joy Division's "She's Lost Control" which I thought was ok, It was certainly different! Today I decided to record the whole song again with new vocals. I am really delighted at how it has come out. I have decided to re-create the original rhythm track of the song and then electronically looked to take the song to a whole new level. It is very electronic bordering on the edge of trance I would say and I do think it is a very original way to tackle a cover version. (Whether Ian Curtis would approve I don't know!)

I hope to have the song on my web pages at the weekend. All the effect processes have been done and I need to tidy up bits of the vocal and then mix the whole thing down.

Keep an eye out for it.

This weeks progress

This week I have been mixing down "Stranger In A Room", "A Face I Knew" and "The Glimmer Man". Both the tracks "A Face I Knew" and "The Glimmer Man" have had a lot of work done on the vocal sections with some nice effects added to them to add "warmth and depth" to them.

In addition I have also done extended mixes of "A Face I Knew" and "The Glimmer Man".

All being well next week I will be starting work on a brand new version of "Rewind To Zero" as I want a version that fits with the current sound I am using. "I remember You" will get a similar makeover.

"Stranger In A Room" was featured on the latest Robo Cast Radio show which is the first time that the song has been heard any where.

"A Face I Knew" is the only track featured on any of my website's at this stage but the other new songs will appear soon. The version I have on icompositions is an early version of the song.

Instruments used for the new songs include

Roland Juno-D Synth
Korg M1 Synth
NI Pro53 Synth
Vanguard Synth
Predator Synth
Superwave Pro Synth
Roland 808 Drum Machine

Stranger In A Room!

Finished recording the new instrumental track "Stranger In A Room" over the weekend and just need to get a better vocal take on "The Glimmer Man" then that is done.

The Numan inspired track "I Remember You" is a track I am considering re-recording and head towards a "John Foxx" direction so it is in keeping with the 3 new songs I have done so far. I am also re-recording "Rewind To Zero" to fit in with the sound I am using so I can put together a brand new electronic album. Here is a list of tracks completed or working on for the new album

"I Once Was A Machine"
"Rewind To Zero"
"I Remember You"
"A Face I Knew"
"Stranger In A Room"
"The Glimmer Man"

I am also going to start work on another new track which is probably going to be called "It Must Be Years"

Considering I was n't working on this type of stuff it now has taken preference over the electronic chillout album I want to record. 2 tracks for that album have been recorded.

Just got the Gary Numan "Telekon Live" DVD which I am hoping to watch tonight and can't wait to watch it to be honest as I wen't to the original "Telekon" dates at the Manchester Apollo in 1980 and was blown away by the whole experience. I will be posting a full review on my myspace page this week.

New Songs Update

It has been an excellent week for me this week with some inspirational idea's flourishing!

First off "The Glimmer Man" is almost complete with just a few vocal takes to do.

Whilst working on "The Glimmer Man" I started messing around with another idea I had in my head and that has resulted in a 3rd song being recorded over the last 2 days. This one will be an instrumental track which now has a title "Stranger In A Room". It is a cross between John Foxx material and the early stuff of Ultravox with Midge Ure. The track has a driving rhythm with a really nice bass melody running through the song with layers of synth pads.

I am starting the final recordings of "Stranger In A Room" this evening then all being well tomorrow I will start the effect processing and mixing.

Recording Of "The Glimmer Man" started

Done some recording today for my new track "The Glimmer Man", so far laid down the drums, bass and a couple of pad sounds. I have a few more ideas in my head for a couple of other songs. It is strange how now and again ideas come to you in droves! other times you struggle like mad to come up with something!

This particular track started with the lyrics then I worked the music around them, something I have not done before mainly because I have n't been brave enough to do vocals!

Instruments used on this track so far include:

Roland Juno-D
Roland CR78 Drum Machine
NI Pro53 Software Synth
Vanguard Software Synth (My favorite piece of software - My Kraftwerk tribute albums were recorded mainly using this)
Superwave Pro Software Synth

New Track Started

I have come up with another new song this weekend quite by accident. Originally I was messing about with the track "A Face I Knew" as I wanted to do an instrumental version which was a bit different than the original track, instead I found myself recording an entirely new track! The song is again very "John Foxx" and is called "The Glimmer Man" and it is sounding very promising indeed. Hopefully I will be able to work on this new track more this week. I have done the lyrics to the song and laid down a rough vocal to see how it fits into the song. Here are the lyrics to "The Glimmer Man" which may obviously change but this is what I have come up with so far.

Here comes the glimmer man
He's lost his way
Dark corners
No sunset
A tidal wave

Here comes the glimmer man
In a suit of grey
Dark corners
No sunset
A tidal wave

Here comes the glimmer man
We Can't delay
Dark corners
No sunset
A tidal wave

Here comes the glimmer man
In a suit of grey
Dark corners
No sunset
A tidal wave

New Track "A Face I Knew" Now Online

The new John Foxx influenced track "A Face I Knew" has been added to my myspace page which you can access here

I have also added the track on my page at iCompositions and can be played via this link

In addition I have added much higher quality files of my Gary Numan cover versions. "Cars" can be listened to here

"I Nearly Married A Human" can be listened to here

My new song and the Numan covers are have resulted in some excellent feedback which I am delighted about.

Another new song is in the pipeline which I think will have a Gary Numan feel to it. It is at it's early stages, in other words the idea is in my head and nothing has been recorded yet, although some lyrics have been done.

"A Face I Knew"

After 2 days my John Foxx influenced tracks is now complete. The song is called "A Face I Knew" and really does have a "Metamatic" feel about it especially his track "This City". The track will shortly feature on my websites.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

When you walked by me
Through the summer haze
I saw your picture postcards
From bygone days

Then when you turned
You walked towards me
A distant shadow in the light
Your cigarette was burning brightly
And now you're almost out of sight

Time waits for no one
Watch the daylight fade
I saw his dim lit features
We can't erase

Then when you turned
You walked towards me
A distant shadow in the light
Your cigarette was burning brightly
And now you're almost out of sight

Another Brand New Electronic Track On The Way

Is n't strange how ideas can flow so freely one minute then the next your struggling! On the back of my track "I Remember You" I have recorded another new electronic track. It is more up beat and sounds very much like the early work of John Foxx (Metamatic period). I love John's music so to come up with something that is similar in sound to John's is a real bonus. The whole idea has evolved this week with a melody constantly ringing in my head! Today I set about laying down some ideas and recording them and I'm amazed that I have recorded all the parts for the song as ideas came thick and fast and I'm delighted with the very rough demo I have recorded. I have done some of the lyrics and laid down a rough vocal take.

Thus far the track is untitled that is about the only thing that has eluded me with this song!

4 electronic tracks now so it is heading towards an electronic album!

Once this track is done and dusted it is definitely back to the chillout album unless of course another idea surfaces!

I Remember You - Now Complete

After less than a week I have completed my Gary Numan influenced track "I Remember You". During this week it has seen some big changes but I am finally happy with the version recorded. No doubt there will be a few minor tweaks! The song definitely has a "Telekon" feel about it which I am more than happy with as that album is amongst my all time favourites.

On a further "Gary Numan" note I contacted the people who look after Gary's official Myspace site as I have recorded some cover versions of some of his songs and wanted to get permission to upload them on to my myspace player and a couple of my other web pages I have and have been told that there is no problem with that at all. The only issue would be if I wanted to try and sell the songs which is more than fair. The songs will purely be on my web pages to listen to only and not to purchase.

I have completed 3 cover versions and they are:

"Cars"
"I Nearly Married A Human"
"Replicas"

At weekend I will be starting the 3rd song of my electronic chillout album, probably "The Long Goodbye"

Keep a check on my pages for the Numan cover versions and my brand new original song "I remember You".

I Remember You - Progress Update

I have been working on this track this evening and laid down the drums, which sound quite powerful, which is unusual for me as I prefer a very subdued rhythm section! The bass synth has been recorded and that really does sound good with the drums.

If I get chance tomorrow I will record the main synth bits and start adding effects etc. I have a feeling that this is going to be a very good track with Gary Numan's influence all over it. With this track I now have 3 songs all influenced by early Gary Numan stuff. The other tracks are "Rewind To Zero" which is influenced by the opening track "Airlane" on Gary's album "The Pleasure Principle" and "I Once Was A Machine" which is inspired by the "Replicas" album. Both of these tracks have been very popular on a variety of Podcasts and well received on the Myspace community. The new track has a "Telekon" feel to it with a hint of his more up to date stuff ..... interesting!

You can listen to "Rewind To Zero" Via This Link

You can listen to "I Once Was A Machine" Via This Link

I suppose this could lead to a full album in the near future!

All things Numan!

Since last night I have made excellent progress with my Gary Numan influenced track. The song is called "I Remember You" and will be a vocal based track. I would describe it as a Numan ballad with a nice string arrangement melody. I need to do more rhythm as so far I have only layed down the bass & Snare drums. Most of the keyboard & synth parts are done. I have changed the arrangement of the song as we speak. For those interested these are the lyrics I have done for the song:

I remember you
with your painted eyes
with thoughts as cold as ice
you turned and walked away

Do you remember me?
with the cold grey smile
if i could see you now
we could forget the lies

I remember you
such a bright young thing
you let your dreams grow old
you could just fade away

Do you remember me?
with the cold grey smile
if i could see you now
we could forget the lies

I think the lyrics so far are also very Gary Numan.

Last night I finished recording the final bits of "A Moment With You" for the "Where Do We Go From Here?" album. The Gary Numan track is a side project to this album so tracks for that will hopefully get recorded inbetween recording songs for "Where Do We Go From Here?".

Instruments I Am Using

The instruments used so far on the 2 tracks I am currently working on include:

Roland Juno-D
Korg M1
Korg Wavestation
ReFX Vanguard VSTi
Absynth 3 VSTi

Gary

Work started on new album .... at last!

After spending 7 months recording numerous Kraftwerk tracks I have now begun work on my album "Where Do We Go From Here?". I have had various tracks posted on websites of demo's in different forms. Initially I was going to record a soundtrack type album as the original demo's were heading in that direction, however, I have been trying different ideas and the main album has taken more of an "Electronic Chillout" direction. I may well still do a soundtrack version but that will be put on hold until the main CD is complete. I am also do an analog edition of the album which will have totally different versions of the tracks recorded using analog synths. So far I have 5 songs recorded using the analog synths, they are, "Where Do We Go From Here?", "Quiet Splendour", "A Moment With You", "The Long Goodbye" and "Distant Glimmer".

For now I am going to concentrate on the main album which is now moving forward, albeit, quite slowly as I wanted to settle on a style before recording the songs. "Quite Splendour" has been recorded and is quite an upbeat track, nothing like the original ambient demo I recorded. Delighted with that track. I am currently working on "A Moment With You" which is getting there, this has an "Enigma" style rhythm running through the song. Both tracks have plenty of pad sounds, choir sounds and the odd sequencer part in them.

At some point I will be uploading the 2 songs, probably in the next week or so on the various web sites I have.

You can listen to the early demo's and the analog versions of tracks completed across the web pages I have. Below are the links:

I intend to do regular updates on this blog so you can see how things progress with my recordings so keep checking back often.

Finally to end on a music note I am currently learning Gary Numan's track "When The Machines Rock" which I hope to do a recording of and am also working on another "Numan" style track of my own, which incidently, I am going to work on tonight!
